Myths and legends have the power to be timeless and to be reinterpreted and translated into multiple forms. Architecture and design, too, sometimes draw upon the imagery of myth, as in the fortunate case of Duilio Forte, an Italian-Swedish artist who in the Sleipnir series, brings the Norse legend of Odin’s eight-legged horse to life. In his hands, the horse of the North materializes: an imaginative idea transformed into a tangible substance, transforming into unexpected proportions in which scale itself takes on the name of Odin’s horse. In 2026, together with students from the Forte Atelier and the School of Architecture at the Università della Svizzera Italiana, Sleipnir is staged as a labyrinth of doors inside the TAM, the Teatro dell’Architettura Mendrisio designed by Mario Botta. Here, in a poetic and scenic gesture that draws on composition, the myth becomes scenography and unfolds like a dreamlike journey.
At the center stands the proud horse, the magnetic focus and transposition of the legendary creature, returning to this primordial heart and echoing a dance of thresholds and passages. Through intense compositional exercises, the young designers have woven a web, a sequence of variegated thresholds in their own possession where, beyond all else, as in Ariadne’s thread that recalls the void, a red drape flows, connecting the passages and embracing the animal in a gesture that both disorients and protects. The entrances to the labyrinth are arranged as opposing dialectics: volatile thresholds that separate in order to defend themselves and open in order to welcome. Crossing the work means enacting the very essence of building: that breath in which the boundary separates the outside from the inside only to reconnect them and allow them to touch, legitimizing their respective existences and making them eternally possible.
Miti e leggende hanno la potenza di essere atemporali e di essere riletti e tradotti in molteplici condizioni. Anche l’architettura e il design a volte si impadroniscono dell’immaginario del mito, come nel fortunato caso di Duilio Forte, artista italo-svedese, che nella serie Sleipnir riporta in vita la leggenda nordica del cavallo a otto zampe. Tra le sue mani l’eco del nord si materializza: un’idea immaginifica muta in sostanza tangibile, declinandosi in proporzioni inattese nella celebre serie che riprende il nome del cavallo di Odino. Nel 2026 insieme alle studentesse e agli studenti dell’Atelier Forte dell’Accademia di architettura dell’Università della Svizzera italiana, viene messa in scena Sleipnir e il labirinto di porte all’interno del TAM. Teatro dell’architettura Mendrisio progettato da Mario Botta. Qui, in una poetica osmosi creativa prende vita la composizione che, più che una scenografia, si propone come un viaggio onirico. Al centro sorge il fiero destriero, fulcro magnetico e trasposizione della creatura leggendaria e, attorno a questo cuore primordiale, si snoda una danza silenziosa di soglie: attraverso intensi esercizi compositivi, i giovani progettisti hanno intessuto un dedalo, una sequenza di varchi unici nella loro intima espressione dove, a legare il tutto, come un filo di Arianna che ricama il vuoto, scorre un drappo rosso che connette i passaggi e cinge l’animale in un abbraccio che disorienta e protegge. Gli ingressi del labirinto si ergono a dispositivi dialettici: volti bifronti che disgiungono per difendere e si dischiudono per accogliere. Varcare l’opera significa mettere in atto l’essenza dell’edificare: quel respiro esatto in cui il confine separa l’esterno dall’interno per poi ricongiungerli e farli sfiorare, legittimando le proprie esistenze e rendendosi eternamente possibili.
